The holidays may be all about decadent, rich food, but New Year's is all about the delicious DRINKS! Oh, sure, the traditional beverage of choice is champagne ... or if you prefer the Italian version like I do, then prosecco. But there's a whole world of interesting, inventive cocktails perfect for ringing in the new year!

Here, five wow-worthy cocktail recipes made for New Year's Eve ...

  • Resolution Cocktail

    1

For this antioxidant-packed concoction, combine 1 1/2 ounces vodka, 2 ounces apple cider, 1 pinch ground ginger, 1 pinch powdered chai tea mix (optional), 1 ounce merlot, and a splash of lime juice in a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously, then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with an apple slice.

  • Blood Orange French 75 Cocktail

    2

If you're preparing for a crowd and want to go a little more creative -- and citrusy -- than straight champagne, try this tasty tart cocktail from Bon Appetit:

    Ingredients:

    • 3 blood oranges (about 1 pound)
    • 1 1/2 cups gin
    • 2 tablespoons sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon angostura bitters
    • 2 750-ml bottles chilled Champagne

    Directions:
Cut 1 orange in half through stem. Cut each orange half crosswise into 6 slices; reserve for garnish. Using small knife, cut peel and white pith from remaining 2 oranges; chop oranges. Transfer chopped oranges with juices to bowl; mash with potato masher or wooden spoon. Stir in gin, sugar, and bitters. Strain into 2-cup measuring cup, pressing on solids to release liquid. Chill 4 hours.

Pour scant 2 tablespoons gin mixture into each of 12 glasses; fill with Champagne and garnish with orange.

    Recipe serves 12.

  • Paloma (Classic Margarita With Bubbles!)

    3

The Paloma, a fizzy twist on the classic margarita, is a must for any tequila lover on NYE. To make: Fill an 8-ounce glass with ice, add 1 1/2 ounces 100 percent agave reposado tequila and juice of 1/2 medium lime, then top off with grapefruit-flavored soda (like Sprite).

  • Midnight Martini

    4

If you don't want to stop partying as soon as the clock strikes 12, you may need a little caffeine lift, which the Midnight Martini is sure to offer. Pour 3 1/2 oz. vodka or coffee vodka and 1/4 oz. coffee liqueur into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, stir with a bar spoon, and garnish with a lemon twist. (Midnight Martinis are also often served as a shooter, just shake, strain into a shot glass, and go for it.)

  • Lemon Drop Champagne Punch

    5

This light 'n' sweet celebratory libation works for New Year's Eve or even a New Year's Day brunch, and serves 6-8:

    Ingredients:

    • 3 lemons, room temperature
    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 1 bottle (750 milliliters) Champagne, chilled
    • 3/4 cup best-quality vodka, chilled
    • 4 ounces candied lemon peels

    Directions:

    1. With a vegetable peeler, remove zest from each lemon in a long, continuous spiral. Juice lemons, and strain pulp (you should have 3/4 cup juice). Set aside.
    2. Heat sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Add zest. Let syrup cool completely, about 2 hours.
    3. Pour Champagne, vodka, lemon juice, and syrup into a punch bowl; stir. Serve glasses of punch with candied peels.
