The Only Eggnog Recipe You'll Ever Need
I have to admit, it was a long time before I learned to love eggnog. As a kid, I found the holiday classic to be completely confusing: Why didn't it taste like a vanilla milkshake? It looked like a vanilla milkshake, kind of. Why didn't the brown powder on top taste like chocolate? And so on.
But now that I've developed a taste for nutmeg and appreciate the value of a good winter cocktail, I feel very differently about eggnog. My philosophy? If you're gonna do it, don't do it halfway -- that's why I love Paula Deen's recipe for Mama's Eggnog. Yes, Paula Deen! And no, there isn't any butter in this nog (but there is bourbon, which is better). Cheers!
6 eggs, separated
3/4 cup sugar
1 pint heavy cream
4 pints milk
1/2 pint bourbon
1 tablespoon vanilla
In a bowl beat the egg yolks with the 1/2 cup of sugar until thick. In another bowl beat the egg whites with 1/4 cup of sugar until thick. In a third bowl beat the cream until thick. Add the cream to the yolk, fold in the egg whites, and add the milk, bourbon, vanilla, and a pinch of nutmeg if desired. Chill in freezer before serving.
Serve eggnog in a large punch bowl.
