Nesquik Chocolate Milk Recall: How It May Affect Your Kids' Favorite Drink

hot cocoa with marshmallowsWe're gettin' into that time of year where nothing beats snuggling up on the couch with a nice toasty drink ... But you may need to hold the cocoa in your hot cocoa. Or worse yet -- your kids' favorite drink, which is undoubtedly, at any time of the year, chocolate milk! That's because Nestle is recalling more than 200,000 canisters of its chocolate drink mix Nesquik due to possible contamination of salmonella. Ack!

Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported in conjunction with the contamination. But I'm sure plenty of consumers are still going to wonder ... how the heck did this happen?

Nestle reports that the problem occurred in batches of the mix produced in October. The company says their ingredient supplier, Omya Inc., has issued a recall of certain lots of its ingredient, calcium carbonate. (Not sure how salmonella makes its way into that! Weird!) Linda Pleiman, an Omya spokesperson, said that it had notified its other customers of the problem but was not aware of any other recalls at this time. Nonetheless, given the way the most recent wide-spread peanut butter recall went down, sounds like something we should keep our eyes and ears open for.

In the meantime, here's the scoop on the affected products: The bottom of affected canisters says it's best to use by October 2014. And the size of canisters affected are 40.7 ounces, 21.8 ounces, and 10.9 ounces. Also, FYI: The two small ones have a promo for the current Disney flick, Wreck-It Ralph, on the side of the container and the words "Be a Hero" across the bottom.

Nestle said consumers who have the product can return to the place of purchase for a full refund or or contact Nestle Consumer Services at (800) 628-7679.

Are you surprised by this recall?
