There will be no Big Mac at the two newest McDonald's restaurants in India. And no McNuggets. Nope. The chain is opening up its first vegetarian restaurants. You heard that right, McDonald's -- vegetarian! Did you ever expect to see those two words put together?
It is so happening. The chain in India is already beef- and pork-free to appeal to Hindu and Muslim customers (while serving up specialties like the Chicken Maharajah Mac). But since the two new restaurants are near religious sites McDonald's decided to appeal to super-observant pilgrims and go full-vegetarian. What will they serve instead?
Veggie burgers, for starters. McDonald's India serves something called the McAloo Tikki burger, made with a mashed potato patty. There's also the McEgg -- basically a fried, sunny-side egg on a bun with red onion and what appears to be a yogurt sauce. Not your typical Egg McMuffin. And there's the Pizza McPuff, a vegetable and cheese pastry that looks to me like a giant samosa (not sure where they're going there with the "pizza" but I guess why not bring Italy to the party?)
Wouldn't it be cool if they offered these sandwiches in the U.S. -- even if just for a limited time? I think restaurants are at their best when they're working under limitations and catering to local tastes. And I KNOW there are plenty of vegetarian fast food fans here. (Hello, my brother, circa 1998, living on French fries...)
McDonald's isn't the only fast food chain doing an Indian twist on their menu. Check out KFC's Indian menu -- "street" food, rice, and what looks a lot like a frozen mango lassi. But I doubt they'll go vegetarian any time soon. I mean... it's a chicken place. I'm sure other fast food chains will be watching to see how the vegetarian restaurants do in India, though.
Would you try any of McDonald's India's vegetarian foods?
