7 of the Most Wicked Restaurant Tip & Bill Stories of the Year

tipWhen it comes to exchanging money at restaurants, I think most of us usually do the right thing. We try to show each other respect. It's the humane thing to do, right? If you can't tip properly, stay the hell home! We SANE people keep the world running smoothly.

But then there are the others. The jerks who refuse to tip. The surly employees who leave offensive messages on our receipts. And also the wonderfully crazy people who leave out-sized tips -- and tip the whole balance of the universe. Here are a few of our favorite wacky restaurant tipping and billing stories.

  • Single Mom's Mega Bonus

A generous couple made single mom and waitress Kristen Ruggiero's day when they left her a 1,000 percent tip: $458 for a $42 meal! Not too shabby for a pizza joint. After paying a few bills, Kristina took her three kids to Six Flags.

  • Struggling Waitress Deserves Generous Tip

Another waitress was given an even more amazing tip: $12,000 left in a pizza box! With five kids, that money would have really helped ... but when she reported the money to the police (just in case it was a mistake), they decided to hold on to the money because it smelled like drugs. Oh really? The waitress is suing for her tip, dang it!

  • Ass Discount

A worker possibly from Twisted Root Burger apparently gave a diner a two-cent discount on account of her "best butt" and her good looks. I'm sure the compliment went further than those two pennies saved.

  • Totally Racist Bill

And on the other end of the crazy food bill spectrum, there's Minhee Cho, who got a receipt from Papa John's identifying her as "lady chinky eyes." Nice going, asshat. Minhee got the last laugh, though, after she posted the bill to Twitter and let the whole world share in her disgust.

  • Locked Inside the Restaurant!

A Houston family was actually locked inside a restaurant because they refused to pay a tip. On the one hand, the restaurant is very clear about charging a 17 percent gratuity for parties of five or more. Buyer beware! On the other hand, it sounds like the service was abysmal. But perhaps locking diners inside a restaurant is not the best customer service, no?

  • Greedy Banker Tips 1 Percent

Ooh, this one is the worst! Just to be a jerk, a banker left his waitress a 1 percent tip and wrote "get a real job" on the bill. OH BUT WAIT -- this story was later proven a hoax! My faith in humanity is restored.

  • Tip or Car Loan?

And finally, another heart-warming tale of generosity. An anonymous couple, regulars at a Houston restaurant, left a waiter a $5,000 tip after his car was destroyed in a storm. The waiter wants to treat it as a loan, but either way it's awfully sweet.
