Chocolate Company in Trouble for Claiming Chocolate Syrup Is Good for Us

chocolate syrupWere you hoping your wild ride through chocolate milkville this morning would deliver you extra nutrients thanks to the chocolate syrup? Silly! It's CHOCOLATE SYRUP, not magic. Hershey's is getting slapped on the wrist over their Syrup+Calcium and their Syrup Sugar Free with Vitamin & Mineral Fortification products. Apparently these syrups do not meet the high nutritional guidelines required to make such lofty claims as "PLUS" and "FORTIFIED." Busted!

See, in order to use those labels on your food that food must contain at least 10 percent of the daily requirements for those vitamins and minerals -- oh bla, bla, bla. You know what? I have a pretty good idea of how this probably happened.

This is purely hypothetical, but here's how I see it all going down:

1. Product strategy meeting: Our customers want more nutritious food, but they hate eating actual fruits and vegetables. They'd rather eat chocolate syrup! So let's put minerals and stuff in our syrups.

2. Research and development: Ew, when we actually add enough minerals and junk to make a difference this syrup tastes like licking the vitamin aisle floor of a health food store. Maybe we add less?

3. Marketing: We must use these words or they won't buy it: FORTIFIED. PLUS. Got it? Great.

And the rest is history. Except now Hershey's has to change the names on their bottles, which they say they've done already, okay you guys? So stop bugging them.

But I'm still shaking my head over the whole idea of making a "sometimes" food -- DESSERT -- into a nutritional supplement. This approach to eating bites us in the ample ass every single time. You want nutritious food that's good for you? Eat some FOOD food, the kind that grows on plants and doesn't get transformed in a factory before it gets to your plate. The kind that has vitamins and minerals in it already! All you have to do is EAT IT.

And then, if you've been a good girl or boy, and it's a weekend (in my house) you may have dessert. Oh goody, a chocolate milkshake made with syrup. It's the way things are supposed to be. Jeebus!

Do you ever eat "fortified" sweets?
