Pop quiz: In which state would you expect to find the most outrageous, over-the-top, most maddeningly fattening but amaaaaazing food? Like ... deep-fried Girl Scout Cookies. Mmmmm. YES. These actually exist -- and will be served, in honor of the Girl Scouts of America's 100th birthday, at the end of September at the State Fair of ... Texas! Where else?!
After all, if anyone knows how to go big or go home, it's Texans. And I can't think of anything bigger and more OMG jaw-droppingly decadent than a FRIED Samoa. Yup, what you're looking at is the fan favorite -- a vanilla cookie coated in caramel and toasted coconut, drizzled with chocolate stripes -- after being deep-fried. Yow!
The out-of-this-world concoction is actually the brainchild of the Girl Scouts, who decided the Samoa would be fun to fry for the fair, and their go-to fry gal, Christi Erpillo, who mastered the best way to dunk the cookie into the deep fryer. Erpillo told the Dallas Morning News:
My favorite cookie in the whole world is a Samoa. That just happened to be the one the Girl Scouts wanted fried. It was perfect.
I know, all you Thin Mint fans out there are probably wondering why they passed over the #1 best-selling Girl Scout cookie for the Samoa. Well, apparently, Thin Mints and the deep-fryer aren't really a match made in state fair heaven ... The cookie's peppermint oil would separate in the fryer. Bummer.
Thankfully, Erpillo was able to make the Samoa work -- by placing a cookie in between two wonton wrappers before tossing it into the fryer, then topping the fried delight with caramel, toasted coconut, and chocolate. (Oy to the vey.) She explains:
The wonton wrapper doesn't camouflage the taste of the cookie. It fries up light and crispy. It basically is doing is protecting the Samoa. ... That's what we want to showcase -- the cookie.
Honestly, gluttonous deep-fried fair foods -- like funnel cakes, corn dogs, even Oreos -- have never really appealed to me. I always thought, why on earth would you go and fatten up something already evil? But this Girl Scout cookie hit the nail on the head. Melty, ooey-gooey plus a crunchy fried won-ton? SIGN ME UP.
