New Bagged Salad Recall Is Part of a Disturbing Pattern
It's time for another bagged salad recall! What's it been, a month or two? (Yes, almost to the day.) Well fortunately, today's recall is relatively small: Dole is recalling just over a thousand cases of bagged salad sold at Kroger and Walmart stores. Listeria showed up in random testing for the batch. The salads were sent to Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
And phew, so far no reported illnesses! So let's make sure it stays that way -- more specific information about the recalled bagged salad below the jump. The salad shouldn't be on store shelves anymore, but you never know.

Does it seem like maybe the bagged salad idea is just a little bit flawed? There was that recall a month ago, and then another one just the month before that. Or maybe it's just that producers are being more careful about testing and doing precautionary recalls. I think the feeling now is, "better safe than sorry." Better to be over-cautious and do a recall than to gamble and hope no one gets sick. And we should be glad about that.
This seems like a good time to say -- for the 1000th time -- wash those greens! It's worth getting into the habit. For me, each of these recalls is another kick in the pants reminding me not to skip that step.

If it's random testing, then why don't they just get the results back BEFORE they ship the shipment out? If a hospital can get back a single patient's test result (not to mention an entire hospital full of them) in half an hour or so, why can't they get one back before the end of the day when the truck leaves? Then they'd know if it's safe to go out or not, not weeks after!

Sushi is a mercerary (sp?) issue just make sure you don't order shark fin, or fish like fatty tuna. I ate alot of sushi during my pregnancy. Deli meats I though in microwave for like 30 sec. kills any bacteria on it. Salad aviod bagged. Use a knife and cut it up your self and wash it. My guess the issue comes from the leaves being pre cut then the slightest heat temperment equals bad bacteria.

I got sick from their last recall and it was awful! I will NEVER buy bagged salad again. I was sick for over a week, I felt like I was dying!

No. Bagged salad is a waste of money. You have to wash it several times then spin it dry anyway, so the only labor saved is the tearing of the leaves. If I am going to have to do all that, then I might as well tear a large bunch of romaine (if you have to cut, use a plastic lettuce knife), wash it (with some lemon juice in the final rinse), spin it dry and have a larger bowl of greens that still looks and taste fresh and crunchy for twice as long as bagged salad= I actually get to eat it all= saves money.

Who bought a bagged salad the other day from Kroger then ate it all...me! And I live in Georgia...ugh. I'm so sick of having to worry about food I put in my mouth or my kids mouth...it's getting ridiculous.
