Don't you hate those stories about jerks who leave bad tips -- or no tip at all? The banker who tipped a waitress 1 percent. Tiger Woods and LeBron James. Those guys! They can afford to show their appreciation for hard work but for some reason they don't. It's enough to make a person want to spit in their drink. (Not that we encourage that sort of thing, officially.)
Well, balance in the tipping universe has been restored somewhat thanks to Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. Over Memorial Day weekend Dave left the bartender a $1000 tip at the Rittenhouse Smith and Wollensky in Philadelphia. TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW! I swear, if I could make your confetti flow down your monitor right now I would. We have winner: Dave Grohl is Good Tipper 2012. Dave, c'mon up here and accept your prize: Your very own CafeMom mug.
Okay, that's a lame prize. But the point is, that was way cool of you, man.
And this tip wasn't for a whole long night of debauchery in which Dave bought everyone drinks and danced on the bar. The first night he only had ONE drink. And the next night just a couple. I'm sure the service was fine, friendly but nothing special. Maybe they gave his martini an extra shake. Or they were careful not to let the foam on his beer overflow. I don't know.
I'm not saying we should all tip $1000. (Because I can't do that.) But this sort of thing doesn't happen every day. When it does happen I feel like we should mention it. And you should hear horns blowing and see that confetti flowing down your monitor and Dave Grohl should get a free CafeMom mug. Cheers, Dave Grohl!
Have you ever tipped extra because you were in a good mood or just really impressed?
