'Healthiest Meal Ever' Sounds Like It's Anything But

by Julie Ryan Evans on June 18, 2012 at 1:49 PM

dinnerYou've probably claimed to have eaten "the healthiest meal ever" at some point while patting your own back, but scientists have actually concocted THE healthiest meal ever. After years of work and in-depth scientific review of health claims, they came up with a menu that's packed with super foods and all sorts of good-for-you ingredients. The most surprising part: It doesn't look half bad.

In fact, it sounds pretty darn delicious, and it even includes a somewhat seemingly decadent dessert. There are snacks too. Okay, there's at least one strange sounding item included, but for the most part, I'd be happy to eat this any given day. Here's what's on the menu for the dinner of champions, according to CTV News:

  • Fresh and smoked salmon terrine
  • Mixed leaf side salad with extra virgin olive oil dressing
  • High fiber multi-grain bread roll
  • Chicken casserole with lentils and mixed vegetables -- low in saturated fat and sodium
  • Live yogurt-based blancmange topped with walnuts and sugar-free caramel flavored sauce

Snack suggestions include:

  • Cranberry, raspberry, and elderflower multivitamin and mineral sports drink
  • Velvety hot chocolate
  • Walnut snack pack
  • Activated charcoal packets
  • Mixed berry meal replacement shakes -- for dieters
  • Pure spring water
  • Sugar-free spearmint chewing gum with Xylitol

Activated charcoal packets, aside, it sounds quite delicious, no? Food is always about the execution, but it certainly doesn't sound like what I'd imagine the healthiest food ever to sound like. It sounds much better.

If it sounds a bit like an airline meal, that's because it was designed that way. Why? I'm not sure, but it sure sounds better than the bag of pretzels, indiscernible mush, or a big old serving of nothing I've seen on flights lately.

While we might not all whip up this exact menu, I think it is helpful to see examples of how healthy food doesn't have to be punishment. Things can taste good and be good for you. Also, it seems that when it comes to our attempts to be healthier, we think of what we have to deprive ourselves of rather than what we get to eat. Focusing on super foods we want to add to our diet rather than always worrying about which bad foods to eliminate can be a nice change of pace as well.

What do you think of the healthiest meal ever? What are your favorite healthy foods that are also delicious?

The bread provides fiber, and I'm sure its not a large portion. That being said, it all looks DELICIOUS!

@pinkbutterfly - actually the bread is good for you too. your body does need SOME carbs, regardless of how much weight you can lose when you cut them out. it's also fiber rich and multi grain, which typically means that it's a less refined flour, usually a coarser whole wheat fiber. it's white flour that's unhealthy for you, from being over-refined and all the nutrients being sapped out.

My favorite thing to eat are advocados. I eat a plain hass advocado almost daily like some do apples. At first I was concerned about the fat content, but my docotr assured me its good fat, and that as long my calorie intake stays where it should, it's fine.

    BTW, what are charcoal packets?

My problem would be with the sugar-free caramel "flavored" sauce. What kind of chemicals are in that to give it the caramel flavor?

I have started cutting out PROCESSED foods from my grocery trips. I'm back to being home all day so I would rather just find ways to make delicious meals with WHOLE foods rather than have the "convenience" of items like mac and cheese and Top Ramen. Honestly, my daughter LOVES Top Ramen and boxed mac and cheese, and she's pretty picky so this could present a real challenge, but I'm up for it. I think that the overly processed junk is the real culprit behind America's obesity problem. My husband and I are both overweight and I cringe at the thought of my daughter having to struggle with her weight as she gets older. For these reasons, I have opted to change my grocery shopping habits.

I eat like this almost every night, and have for over a year.
Its probably why even though I'm chubby, my dr said I'm the healthiest woman he's seen that's had 4 kids.
I'm only chubby because I loooove me some pastries. LoL

Butterflyfreak- yep! I completely agree. We are an overweigh, and under-nourished country. As a whole, we eat sooo much, but without much nutritional value.
With special weekends, like fathers day, where we splurge on large quantities of food to feed large amounts of company, and my baking obsession, I would say we eat whole foods about 80% of the time since last year.
I put my entire family on notice that it was time for a lifestyle change, and I took over every bit of the cooking, and we're all healthier for it :)

Bread doesn't have to be bad. I lost 20 pounds when I became a "carbivore".... I switched to whole grains only (even in pastries) and stopped feeling deprived.
