Romney Campaign Trashes Restaurant & Leaves a Bad Taste in Owner's Mouth (VIDEO)

by Adriana Velez on June 14, 2012 at 4:38 PM

main street cafeWhen "Hurricane Romney Campaign" blew through Main Street Cafe in Council Bluffs, Iowa last week, they left a big ol' mess behind. The cafe hosted a small roundtable for Romney. But the staff broke a framed photo of owner Diane Bauer's dead father (among other things), wouldn't let customers use the restrooms, and wadded up and tossed away her tablecloths. And Mitt Romney never even bothered to introduce himself to Diane like Rick Perry did when he visited.

Word of Diane's shock went online, which is when Romney called her to apologize -- but the call totally backfired because Diane felt like he was mocking her!

She says, "He responded 'well, I'm sorry your tablecloths got ripped off, wadded up, and thrown in the back room' and I took it as mocking." I'm sure Romney wasn't trying to mock her, but having heard the sort of light, lofty way he talks, I can see how she would have gotten that idea. Did he sound imperious, impatient, flippant? However he sounded, he made her feel small.

Diane says she wonders now, "With how he treated me, is that how he's going to treat others? You know, if he gets in office is he going to be that way to us little people?"

Now before I get all outraged on Diane's behalf, there's something I have to admit: Parents sometimes do the very same thing. I don't invade cafes with a whole campaign staff, but there have been times when my family has joined another family for dinner and wow -- it's really hard not to trash the place. Kids are just messy. Even if you're at a kid-friendly place, I think it's important to at least try and minimize the damage, clean up after kids, and be as kind and accommodating to the wait staff as you possibly can.

But then, most of us are a lot closer to Diane Bauer's way of life than we are to Romney's. So we can relate.

Have you ever left a big mess at a restaurant? Did you feel like you should apologize?

Wow, if this is how he treats his supporters, how is he going to treat everyone else?

Er, it's kinda really sad when a group of adults is compared to a group of children. So, yeah, it's also kinda funny.

Nope, we stack all the dishes and put all the trash on the top plate. Then I pick up any food my son ( or his dad, lol) might have dropped on the floor. I can't stand it when parents let their children throw food all over the floor and leave it for the staff. How rude!

When I was a child, my mother always neatly stacked the dishes on our table and scooped up all the crumbs.  I do the same thing (especially after I spent a few months as a waitress!).

Wow. Someone is really looking hard for things to bash Romney about. I'm sure if there even was an incident, that it has been blown out of proportion.

@Todd I was thinking the same, especially since is the man who only wants to win the 50.1% of the vote that he needs to win the election. Makes me wonder how he is going to treat the 49.9% that doesn't vote for him?

@Billsfan , if the incident is making the news, I think that's proof enough, or did you not watch the video? Or you can simply google "romney campaign trashes restaurant" and read the myraid of links there. What other proof do you need?

You have to be kidding me. Right? You really expect him to clean up? In a restaurant? Not very many people do that. I think someone is really digging for a story to write.  Do you really expect me to believe that Obama buses and does the dishes? Or his staff? Puleeze. They're campaigning.

@MsRkg, all that video was was that woman's sour grapes. It "proved" absolutely nothing and I sure wouldn't call The Stir the news. I just watched our local and national news and didn't see this on there so no, it's not on the news as of yet so I'm with Billsfan.

Also, if her dad gave her something that can't be replaced, I'd think it wouldn't be in a restaurant where anything could happen to it.

This post ticks me right off. Did you hear when she said "you'd think Obama had been here." What the heck does that mean? That it would have been okay for him to do this but not Romney???? What a load of crap.

MsRkg, I am waiting for Romney to make a statement.  Her just saying he did this and that, doesnt prove a thing.

Just like when Hillary didnt leave a tip for a waitress in my town.  I didnt believe it until Hillary's camp made an apology and gave her a tip.
