Cockroach Falls Into Man’s Sandwich at Fast Food Restaurant but That Isn’t the Worst Part

by Adriana Velez on June 12, 2012 at 4:44 PM

roachIt's been a while since we last had a fast food health violation gross-out story, don't you think? I agree. So I'm serving up this hot, steaming, vile tale of a fast food restaurant gone all greasy and cockroachy for your daily dose of outrage and disgust. Would you like French fries with that?

Our sorry tale takes place in a Tampa, Florida burger joint. And it begins almost like a fairy tale. A man is eating his lunch when a live cockroach falls into his sandwich. It's like a gift from heaven! Only it's actually from the ceiling. And it's not a gift.

The man calls the health department, a state inspector shows up, and it all does downhill from there.

Oh my goodness, poor Ronald McDonald -- yes, this took place at a McDonald's, much to the dismay of the company.

I was thinking the worst part of this story would be the part where they find out what a shit show is going on in the kitchen -- but no. The worst part is when the manager refuses to let the inspector in for a full 20 minutes. Was he stalling for a quick clean-up (hide the dead bodies!) or did he really think he could avoid an inspection?

After that 20 minutes the kitchen was still a total shit show. The inspection found 21 violations, seven of them "critical." They included grease under the equipment, standing water, and roaches, roaches everywhere. Some dead, some alive. Why, that cockroach-from-heaven was just an appetizer to the colossal mess waiting for the poor inspector inside the kitchen.

So what did we learn, fast food managers and patrons? Well, when there's one falling cockroach in the dining room, there's probably about thirty more in the kitchen. If you're a fast food fan, maybe you should have your state health department's phone number with you at all times. Managers, that guy with the state inspector's business card is FOR REAL. And finally, make sure you never have roaches falling from the ceiling. That's not very do-do-do-do-do-I'm-lovin'-it.

What's the grossest thing you've ever seen at a fast food restaurant?

They were falling from the CEILING? Oh god, these are like rats...where there is ONE there are MILLIONS! Granted this is disgusting, just remember these are franchised....just because ONE is like this doesn't mean they all are (however, I DO question McDonalds requirements for regular inspections at their facilities...Yowza).

I worked in a restaurant that didn't have any roaches until they changed their dry goods supplier. It got so bad employees didn't bring in handbags and carried their keys in their pockets. Sadly that's not the grossest thing I've seen in a restaurant.

Gotta love California with the health inspection ratings and reports posted on the fast food establishments. We only go in and eat at an "A". "B," we'll check it out first. "C" and "D", we don't even bother. Why can't they do that in all fifty states? Been to some states where it is an "eat at your own risk." The grossiest thing I ever saw was at a seafood grill in Manvel, Texas. There was an unknown, don't even know what the heck it was thing in my gumbo soup. It was rubbery and looked like melted plastic. The owner was Asian and pretend not to speak English when I complain. It was the first and last time I went there.

That is a great idea to post the ratings at the door! My mom once found glass in her hamburger!

Florida? I'm not surprised. My next guess would've been Hawaii.

Ya know most states don't have the funding necessary to regularly inspect restaurants. Or hotels. If you want inspections, then you'll pay more in taxes.
I don't disagree that inspections should be happening regularly, but you should know your states guidelines and plan accordingly (or contact your representatives in the state house).

Mice... eeeeeek! At my favorite Chinese spot. I grew up eating their food and moved away... only to visit years later under new management and they where so nasty! Doors left open to save electricity in the summer. Flies buzzing around and landing on food... also on your plate as you fight to take a bite that didnt include one of them.... gross! Also visited a Mcdonalds where the filled bun trays where left out in the customer area where anyone could touch them... and worse part the plastic wasnopen and flies from a near by trashcan where folding them fun to crawl on... I brought it to the franchise owner it was fixed immediately and the manager was fired.

If you think this kind of thing happens solely at fast chains, you need a lesson. ANY food service operation can run like this, fast food, fine dining, school cafeteria. In lots of states the health inspector has scheduled times to visit which means a lot can be swept under the rug for their visit. Other counties barely have enough health inspectors which can mean one visit every few years, even if a complaint is made, it still has to go through proper channels. Don't target fast food joints, it can happen anywhere. I've worked in a lot of kitchens all over this country, I've seen it all. Its also not hard to pay these people off.
