3 Old-Fashioned Gut-Busting Recipes From Great-Grandma's Kitchen

Healthy cooking is all the rage. No butter, no sugar, no gluten -- whatever gluten is. Hey, I'm all for it. If I'm going to cook, I make sure I cook healthy. But it hasn't always been this way. In fact, it used to be de rigeur to use fattening staples like Crisco, Cool Whip, and Jell-O. My great-grandmother did it that way her whole life, and she lived until she was 90. I wouldn't describe her as a small woman, but she enjoyed her eating time!

So read on for 3 old-fashioned, NOT calorie-conscious recipes from my great-grandmother's cookbook. Just don't serve them every day!


Grandma Mae’s Apple Kuchen

2 cups sifted flour

4 tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. salt

4 Tbsp. sugar

1/3 cup Crisco melted

1 egg beaten

2/3 cup milk

2 cups pared, cored, and sliced apples

2 Tbsp. softened butter

¼ cups sugar

1 tsp. cinnamon

Sift together flour, baking poweder, salt, and sugar into mixing bowl. Add melted shortening, beaten egg, and milk. Mix well. Put into a well-greased baking pan, 14 X 10 X 2 inches. Arrange apple slices in rows on top of batter. Press into batter. Spread with softened butter. Sprinkle ¼ cup sugar and cinnamon evenly over top. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes.

Wacky Cake

1 ½ cup flour

1 cup sugar

3 Tbsp. cocoa

½ tsp. salt

1 tsp. soda

Sift all the ingredients together into an 8x8-inch ungreased pan. Make 3 holes in the above mixture. In one, put one teaspoon vanilla. In the other, put one teaspoon vinegar, and in the third, put 5 tablespoons melted shortening. Over the whole batter, pour 1 cup water. Mix well. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees F.

Strawberry Jell-O Goodies

1 large or 2 small pkg. strawberry Jell-O

1 cup finely chopped walnuts

1 cup finely chopped coconut

¾ cup condensed milk

Red crystal sugar

Green crystal sugar

Mix Jell-O, nuts, coconut, and milk together; chill for ½ hour. Shape into berries by rolling in palm of hand. Flatten on one end. Dip in green crystal sugar. Roll in red sugar. Refrigerate for several hours before serving. Keep in freezer.
