A family in Houston was allegedly locked inside a restaurant by the angry staff when they refused to pay a gratuity. Sounds outrageous, right? Well, it depends on how you look at it.
La Fisherman Seafood Restaurant, like many restaurants, charges a 17 percent gratuity to parties of five or more. It's printed right there on the menus. But the family (of over five) was so disappointed with the service, they just refused. Drinks weren't refilled. They didn't get everything they ordered. The servers were rude! Why should they have to tip such lousy service?
Because! When you sit down with a large group of people and order from a menu that clearly states "Parties of five or more will be automatically charged a 17 percent gratuity," THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SIGNING UP FOR. There's no note adding, "If you don't mind, and if you think the service was good." Them's the rules. Period.
More from The Stir: 7 Ways to Make Every Restaurant Hate Your Family
When I see that line on a menu, I tend to think, Abandon all hope of excellent service. I mean, it's pretty much a warning that your table is going to be a huge pain in the ass, so no promises. You might have a rough night. So you take a gamble -- it could be fine, it could be awful.
On the other hand, CLEARLY the family didn't deserve to be locked inside the building. I mean ... that's ridiculous. The family did complain to the manager -- and to be fair, I think the manager should have apologized and made an exception for the gratuity. That's what you're supposed to do in the hospitality business. Not lock the family in and call the police. So I think both parties are in the wrong here.
Do you think the restaurant overreacted? What do you think about mandatory gratuity?

Holy crap! They didn't serve the family all the food and drinks they ordered, but they wanted to be paid for their service? Then, they kidnap them?!?
The family is right. A gratuity is a bonus for good service. These automatic fees are actually surcharges for large parties. I won't tip for crap service, regardless of what is written on the menu.
This is so wrong, if your a reasurant you do not treat people who choose to come into eat there like that. if they felt it wasnt okay to pay them that because there service sucked then yes just let it go and they dont have to pay it.. thats like you go into wendys order a sandwich where i have worked before and then that sandwich wasnt good and you wanted your money back well exactly what i did gave them there money back. its what you do when your in that type of business. you make exceptions for people who are not happy with the service or food, that way they go and tell people good things about you and your service and food. and they also may come back to eat here. common sense
I find it irate how they charge a 17% gratuity then do a shitty job. That's bullshit. I would have reacted just like the family did. I've been to restaurants where the food was bad, and I complained (not really expecting anything) and actually gotten half of my bill deducted. Why? Because they didn't want me to complain to others and risk losing business! I'm sure after this, many people will reconsider before stepping foot into that restaurant!
Agree 100% with Emme & ShayNBrysMommy....... about time somebody around here made sense... can't stand the self-entitlement people have nowdays!! Gotta work for that money!
I come from a big family so we always get this .. if service is bad I do not want to tip that much
Here's the part of the article that stood out to me (my emphasis):
The on-duty manager at La Fisherman Restaurant told KPRC Local 2 they usually don't have a problem with people paying their gratuity, it but admitted they have called police for this type of issue before.
WTH??? This restaurant is clearly run by maniacs or morons, or both.
LOL that resturant isn't staying open for very long, haha, if they wanted bad service then they could have just went to mcdonalds ;p
