how to peel a potatoWhether you love to cook or curse the nights you can't get takeout, we can all use a few shortcuts in the kitchen. And hey, if those shortcuts double as cool tricks that will impress your friends and family and make you look like a pro, then even better.

I have five of these fantastic tips for you here that will change the way you cook. They may not be huge, life-changing revelations, but they will make your life easier and save you some time in the kitchen. For example, let's start with this incredibly easy method to peel a potato without a knife or peeler of any kind

Basically, you boil the potatoes as you normally would, then plunge them into a bowl of ice water. This loosens the peel, and it comes right off. Mashed potatoes just made a comeback in my house!

Garlic is one of the most delicious but most tedious ingredients with which to cook. Getting all of those papery little skins off and out from under your fingernails can be a nightmare. Check out this method to peel an entire head of garlic in less than 10 seconds. It's nothing short of amazing.

Talk about a party trick. With the following mesmerizing method to peel a hard-boiled egg, all you need is a dozen or so eggs, and the good times will roll.

Chopping onions is no fun any way you look at it, but this surefire method will at least ensure you get nicely diced pieces.

Avocados are one of my favorite foods, but among the messiest to cut up ... unless you use this method and cut them up right in their own skin. There's "thwacking" involved.
