Lickable Wallpaper Tastes Like Our Childhood Dreams

lickable wallpaperRemember when Willy Wonka let the kids try out some lickable wallpaper? Well, it only took 40 or so years, but someone finally made lickable wallpaper for real! English chef Heston Blumenthal and artist Damien Hirst created a wallpaper that supposedly tastes just like Jaffa Cakes. And they installed it in an elevator -- an "edible lift," if you will.

Oh I have so many questions about this wallpaper! Don't you? First of all, who gets to lick it? What about sharing germs? Do I really want to re-lick a licked spot? Where can I find this wallpaper? And what the hell are Jaffa Cakes?

Okay, gross things first: You will be relieved to learn that the "cake stickers" are removed from the wallpaper immediately after being licked. This is not a communicable disease and public health experiment. Secondly, this wallpaper exists far, far away in an office in London. It was open to the public as part of a design competition, which means a man dressed as a bumblebee, several dogs, and some "Mad Men" all got to have a lick.

So there's that. And now, Jaffa Cakes: These are cookie-shaped sponge cakes with orange jelly filling and covered in chocolate. Yum. Want some.

Anyway, if lickable wallpaper never finds its way to the shelves of Crate & Barrel, it'll be a damn shame and a true sign of our lack of imagination. Too silly? Too impractical? Let me just remind you what Willy Wonka once said: "We are the music makers. And we are the dreamers of dreams."

If you could have edible wallpaper, what flavors would you want?
