Salad and Sushi Salmonella Recalls: What You Need to Know

saladAttention salad lovers: Check that bagged salad in your refrigerator. Dole is recalling their Seven Lettuces bagged salad because of possible risk for Salmonella contamination. The recall is in effect in Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

During routine testing by the State of New York, some of Dole's lettuce tested positive for Salmonella.

But wait! That's not the only Salmonella contamination story for the day. There's more: Do you like spicy "Tuna" rolls?

Unlike with the lettuce, this Salmonella outbreak wasn't caught in time. Over 100 people in 20 states have gotten sick from packaged spicy tuna sushi rolls. Apparently it was the "Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA" -- the pink slime of the sea! It's yellowfin tuna that's scraped off the bones and turned into a sort of pulp that can be mixed with spices for a tasty raw treat that, now that I hear that description, is maybe not such a great idea to eat raw.

You're starting to see a lot more of that pre-packaged sushi in grocery stores and markets, everyone. I used to think they were just a little risky, but I think I'm going to be a lot more cautious about them now.

A little more info on the lettuce: If you do happen to have Dole's Seven Lettuces at home, check your bags for the product codes 0577N089112A and 0577N089112B or use-by date of April 11, 2012 (located on the upper right-hand corner of the front of the package). Or check the UPC code on the back below the bar code: 71430 01057. Those are part of the recall batch.

Even if you buy "triple-washed" bagged salad, it might still be a good idea to wash your greens one more time. Consumer Reports tested a random sampling of pre-washed bagged greens and found plenty of bacteria (though no pathogens). Rinsing your greens isn't going to chase away all the bacteria, but it can carry away any remaining soil.

I confess, I skip that home-rinsing of my "pre-washed" bagged salad all the time. But recalls like this are always a kick in the tush for me. Time to get back into the habit!

Do you buy pre-washed bagged lettuce? Do you ever rinse those greens, or do you just serve as is?
