Restaurant Makes Fun of Chris Brown & Rihanna With ‘Black n Bleu’ Sandwich
A restaurant in Georgia isn't as clever as they think they are. Chops and Hops, a steakhouse 10 miles south of Athens, decided to name a new bleu cheese steak sandwich after the beating Chris Brown doled out to Rihanna back in 2009. The eatery took to Facebook to announce their new sandwich and joked that Chris won't punch you if you eat this "black 'n bleu" sammy unless, of course, your name starts with R and ends in an A.
Classy, eh? Check out what the full posting read:
@chrisbrown, @rihanna and us teamed up for a (sic) award winning celebrity sandwich. Put your hands on this caribbean black and bleu sandwich. Chris Brown won't beat you up for eating this unless your name starts with a R and ends with A.
After some public backlash, the posting was removed and the restaurant promptly issued a mea culpa -- they pulled the sandwich from the menu and announced that they were going to donate all the profits of the already sold black 'n bleus, times six, to local domestic violence prevention charity. Glad to see that they owned up to the problem and made it right as soon as possible.
Between Chops and Hops and the Heart Attack Grill, restaurants are using social media and somewhat outrageous tactics to get attention, and it's working. Even though what they're saying and what they're serving maybe downright offensive, it's getting their name in the press.
They say there's no such thing as bad publicity, so it's possible Chops and Hops and other eateries who make public mistakes are benefiting from their crudity. I don't know if that was the case for a bar in Texas that wrote "Happy September 11th" on a Muslim customer's to-go box -- that story made national headlines as evidence of an underbelly of bigotry in our country.
As long as restaurants need to compete and draw attention to their menu, there are going to be social media faux pas in the process. Even though they made light of the fact that a woman's face was bashed in, we now know there's a steakhouse near Athens that serves up a black 'n bleu.
Do you think the name of the sandwich was offensive?
