Part of the power of Ben & Jerry's ice cream has always been in the flavors' names. Cute and quirky ones, like Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia, just make a cup or a cone of the creamy stuff all the more fun. Other flavors pack a little more punch and the power to offend, like the recently debated Taste the Lin-Sanity.
Not ones to shy away from hot topics, today the guys introduced a name change for one of its popular flavors that's going to hit the sweet spot for many, and likely sour some others. The flavor formerly known as Oh! My! Apple Pie! has been changed to Apple-Y Ever After.
The reason? They believe ALL people deserve the right to live "appley ever after."
That's right, they're using their ice cream to weigh in on the raging debate over whether gays should be allowed to marry or not. And it's catchy, no?
It will only be available in the UK, where the government is currently debating the issue. The tubs for the new flavor are adorned with a gay couple atop a wedding cake that's strewn with rainbow-colored decorations. What a way to dish up an argument for something about which the company feels strongly. Their website states: "If you think that Civil Partnership is the same as marriage, think again! Show your support and help convince members of parliament that it’s time say ‘I do’ to same sex marriage!"
Ben & Jerry's has long history of support for gay marriage. In 2009 they changed Chubby Hubby to Hubby Hubby in Vermont to celebrate the legalization of gay marriage; and in 1993 they changed their health benefits to include all domestic partnerships regardless of sexual orientation. Ice cream power!
They partnered on this latest project with the Stonewall organization, whose CEO says is "truly moved" by Ben & Jerry's support. Laura Doughty, Stonewall’s Deputy CEO, told Pink News:
All people want is to call their long-term relationship by the same name as everyone else. Our strong advice to those who disapprove of same-sex marriage is just not to get married to someone of the same sex.
I'll eat to that.
What do think of Apple-y Ever After? Do you like to see company's get involved in social issues like this?

I wish they would sell it here in the states cuz I would totally buy it. I love that they are willing to show their support of social issues so blatantly.
I wouldn't buy it because I don't like apple ice cream, but if this is what they want to support, then it is their company and more power to them!
And my inner Grammar Girl is completely apoplectic at your question: the plural of "company" is "companies", not "company's".
I'll be buying more and since I live in the UK I'll be buying this. Screw the homophobes.
WOOHOO! As if I needed another reason to eat Ben and Jerry's ice cream LOL! But here it is. MARRIAGE EQUALITY FOR ALL!!! I am not for gay rights - I am for HUMAN RIGHTS, as in ALL humans!!! :o) Hooray for B&J!!!
