Olive Garden Reviewer Becomes a Star & Gets the Last Laugh (VIDEO)

Marilyn HagertyLast week when I read Marilyn Hagerty's review of the Olive Garden restaurant that had finally landed itself in her town of Grand Forks, North Dakota, I admit my first reaction wasn't all that kind. I first checked to see if it was something from The Onion, then posted it on my Facebook wall, deeming it hilarious that someone would give such a glowing review to such a mundane chain.

Then I quickly started feeling guilty, because it was really kind of a snobby reaction, and it's not like I grew up eating in four-star restaurants. I grew up in Nebraska, and while I don't remember my first Olive Garden experience, I do remember deeming Houlihan's the best restaurant ever when I visited one on a trip to Kansas City in sixth grade. So if she wants to marvel over the Olive Garden, who am I to scoff? But I did.

Many other people were similarly quick to mock and make fun of her well, as the column went viral with this sweet, 85-year-old lady and her little column at the butt of our jokes.  That's why it's so great to see her get the last laugh and give us all a big in your face. Because that column we've all mocked, well it's made her a star.

She can also now count celebrity chefs as her fans, such as Anthony Bourdain who tweeted: "Very much enjoying watching Internet sensation Marilyn Hagerty triumph over the snarkologists (myself included)."

This week she hit New York for a round of media interviews including those on Piers Morgan's CNN show, CBS' "This Morning", ABC's "Good Morning America," and NBC's "Today" Show. She's also getting a dining tour of some of New York's finest restaurants. Not bad for a small town reporter.

As for some of the negative words she's received, she says she doesn't care. She told CBS, "Somebody else called me 'pathetic.' So whatever they call me is fine." Go Marilyn.

Are you glad to see Marilyn Hagerty rise to fame for her Olive Garden review? What was your reaction when you first read it?
