Oh boy, lovers of all things dairy and dessert. A new study shows that ice cream and cocaine create the same cravings in your brain. That search for the 'high' is also the same in cocaine addicts and hardcore lovers (addicts?) of ice cream. Additionally, ice cream eaters and coke snorters alike have to keep upping their consumption in order to recreate that initial feeling of euphoria. While cocaine addicts will gradually become broke and malnourished, ice cream addicts will see their diabetes risk and waist line increase.
I'm thinking I'd rather binge on the cocaine. Kidding! Sort of. Still, I just don't know how we're supposed to react to this news. Set up a Betty Ford Ice Cream Treatment Center?
I'm not making light of addiction. And I realize there is an Overeaters Anonymous organization and you can be addicted to a myriad of things, and need serious help for that addiction. That's not what I'm talking about here. What I'm wondering is: Should we be treating ice cream like an addictive and dangerous substance? Because that seems weird.
The study shows that all junk food can be addictive. As someone who gets crazy sometimes when I drive by In 'N' Out, I can totally see how this would be true. But to most people (again, not people who struggle with addiction), you just keep on driving unless you're underweight and looking to go on the "cheeseburger-a-day" diet.
My husband loves ice cream more than anyone I know. But he doesn't eat it every day. Maybe he really, really, wants to though, and now this information will help keep his ice cream cravings in check. It's easy to say, "Just don't buy it," when we're talking about avoiding the trappings of ice cream addiction. But if you've got a real problem, the will power solution is not the answer.
