Wendy's Should Look Like Wendy's, Not Like IKEA

By now we've all gotten the message loud and clear that Wendy's is giving itself a makeover. And not just any makeover -- a fancy-pants makeover so it can compete with more upscale fast food chains like Five Guys Burgers and Fries and Smashburger. First, there was the roll-out of a new breakfast menu and new premium burgers like the "W" and Dave's Hot 'N Juicy. Now comes what I'm betting the Wendy's execs are thinking is a "sleek and snazzy new look" ... Although, flipping through the photos of the new restaurant design, I can't seem to get a certain affordable Swedish home furnishings store out of my head.

Is it just me or does the new Wendy's look like an IKEA truck just dropped off an extra large delivery? The design is practically identical: modern, minimalist dining furniture, light hardwood floors, couches, and TVs arranged all together and pretending to be a living room. Hey, what are you trying to pull, Wendy's?

Of course, Wendy's could build a shack with a dirt floor, and I'd be there squatting on a mat scarfing down a Crispy Chicken and Natural-Cut Fries. Aesthetics don't really factor into my fast food choices. I could care less what the scenery looks like as long as my food is hot, quick, and tasty.

I'm just a little taken aback by the new, "improved" look because in my mind, as far as fast food chains are concerned, Wendy's has so little to improve on. If it really wanted to make a change, I'd recommend working on the speed of the counter service at the location near my place of employment (but now I'm just being nit-picky). As far as not being upscale enough, I'll take this opportunity to declare: Wendy's, to me, you are perfect. No fancy makeover needed.

Do you like Wendy's? What do you think of its new look?
