It's National Bagel Day, everybody! Sad because you didn't realize this sooner? Don't be. Bagels are perfectly acceptable dinner foods. When it comes to bagels, there shouldn't be any rules or restrictions. They're just too delicious to label them simply as a "breakfast food" and nothing else.
Slab some mayo, avocado and turkey on a bagel? Boom, lunch. Toast some bagel bits up? Boom, bagel chip snack time. Sprinkle on some cheese and tomato sauce? Boom, pizza bagel dinner. Got some leftover bagels from all your bagel shopping sprees? Boom, bagel bread pudding.
Point is, there are tons of ways to enjoy bagels. So here are some ideas to help you to think outside the box when it comes to everyone's favorite round and doughy piece of bread.
The bizarre-but-yummy egg and cream cheese combo bagel: Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on both sides of the bagel, sprinkle on some bacon bits, then add some scrambled eggs on top, smush, and enjoy.
The Elvis bagel: Layer on some peanut butter, add some thin slices of banana, and a slice or two of bacon. YUM. Drizzle on some honey if you're adventurous.
The classic bagel and lox: I love this and get it every weekend. Toast an everything bagel spread with cream cheese, top with lox, capers and tomato. Doesn't get much better. Oh! And try with goat cheese once in a while, it's equally delish.
Pesto and cheese bagel: Mix some pesto in some cream cheese, spread on a toasted sesame bagel, add tomato ... so good.
The savory/sweet bagel: Melt some aged cheddar on a cinnamon raisin bagel for an unreal flavor profile.
The ultimate pizza bagel: You'll need some bagels, pizza sauce, pork sausage, jalapeno, onion, green pepper, shredded cheese, Italian seasoning, and olive oil, but it's worth it. Back for about 12 minutes and all your hard work will have paid off.
S'mores bagel: Spread bagel with some Nutella, put a chocolate graham cracker on top of that, top it with mini marshmallows and chocolate chips, microwave on high for one minute. You're welcome.
