Oh Shamrock Shake, how I adore thee. Seeing your minty green color back at McDonald's makes me all giddy. Your peppermint taste makes my heart beat with a passionate fury. I appreciate your McCafe goodness so much more than the M&M's McFlurry.
At last you've been spotted at stores nationwide. In honor of St. Patrick's Day, you make your big 2012 debut and we excitedly buy! A cult following you've found (they even have their own website!). It's crazy to think such an inexpensive thing (only about $2.29 for a small) brings so much delight!
I don't know if it's possible to find something wrong with you, my friend. Your perfect mixture of vanilla and mint is so enjoyable, can I get an AMEN!? Though, there is one little thing that gives me the worries. I'll give you a hint -- it has EVERYTHING to do with your high amount of calories.
... Okay, enough with the rhyming. Yes, I'm clearly uber pumped that the shake is back in stores. How could I not be? It's so minty, gosh darn delicious, and the perfect St. Patty's Day treat! However, I was a little intimidated when I walked into my local McDonald's earlier today and saw that a Shamrock Shake ranks in at a whopping 540 calories in a SMALL! Wowza! I feel fatter just KNOWING that!
While I'm a health foodie at heart, I've got to be honest: I don't think that the high-calorie tag here is going to keep me away from this seasonal delectable gem. It's so totally worth it.
Craving a shake but don't have time to make it to your local McD's? Don't sweat it. In the meantime, try out this fabulous copycat recipe at home and get in the mood with this chuckle-worthy McDonald's ad for the shake circa 1983:

here is a recipe for a healthy yummy alternative recipe. http://christensenka.squarespace.com/imported-20100106014405/2010/2/24/take-that-mcdonalds-dairy-free-avocado-shamrock-shake-gluten.html
calm down..its just a mint shake.
I love the Shamrock shakes! They are the only milkshake I really like or generally get during the year. I can suck it up and deal with the ~500 calories for a small since one shake is about all I need for the year... maybe a second before they're gone.
Really? A healthy alternative?
Everyone needs something yummy and terrible for them once in awhile. It's actually not healthy to deny yourself the little pleasures.
My favorite treat from McD is hands down, the Shamrock shake! I'm grabbing one on my way home now that I know they are out! Second, the fries are great. I hardly eat there because everything else makes me sick lol.
And OMG, I checked out the recipe and it looks revolting lol.
Maybe a good alternative if you are vegan or lactose intolerant, but I really can't help but thinking there would be a tastier way to do this dairy free. I would try (soy, rice, almond, hemp, whatever) milk, mint syrup (they even make sugar free if you're into that), and ice. Or some kind of veg ice cream. Stooping to avocados is just too much for me to take! I love them, but I don't want to drink them :)
I haven't had a shamrock shake in years. We don't normally eat there, but maybe we'll stop by to get one.
That is one of my husbands favorite things to get around St. Patricks Day. I think they are ok. My favorite thing at McDonald's is a fillet of fish. :)
