Bison, It's What's For DinnerIn case you haven't heard of the latest food trend that requires you eat like a caveman, I'm here to explain it all to you. The Paleo diet -- or "lifestyle" -- aspires to treat your palate as if electricity, heat lamps, drive-thrus, and processed sugar was never invented. In other words, what man ate during the Paleolithic era (around 2.5 million years ago -- @10,000 years ago), when he was in that whole hunter-gatherer stage.
The idea behind eating like a caveman, is that your body is genetically predisposed to digesting foods available during that time period such as grass-fed meats, vegetables, roots, fish, fruits, and nuts. Big no-nos for Paleo diet are basically anything processed, grains, dairy products, legumes and refined sugar.
Some people swear by the Paleo diet, and not unlike the Atkins diet, you will be decreasing your sugar load, so that's always a good thing.
Here are five recipes and websites to help you go ancient.
Slow Cooker Korean Grass Fed Short Ribs
The Paleo site with a sense of humor, Nom Nom Paleo actually makes this diet seem like gluttony. Short ribs? Me want.
Especially effective if you hunt your own bison. But you'll probably just want to pick some up at the farmer's market.
"Creamy" Chicken Tomato Crockpot Soup
From Everyday Paleo, comes this economical and easy crockpot meal to warm your winter cave.
Brussels Sprouts With Beef and Apple
Now that's what I call a twist on your traditional sprouts recipe. My Paleo Kitchen really goes for it, and makes me hungry for some sour balls.
You need dessert, right? I did not know chocolate was something one could find in these pre-dark ages, but according to Paleo Diet Lifestyle, this is all good on the caveman diet.

It will definitely get your body to a healthier state really fast. Even our doctors have congratulated us on how great our blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels are.
I highly recommend this diet for anyone with the strength of will to do it.
If you think you have to catch your own food and eat dinosaur meat to eat Paleo--you're missing the point. Basically--you're eating pasteured, minimally or not at all processed food. Simplify your diet.
It's SOO much better for your health and life expetancy. & It makes a heckuva lotta sense. Try it before you knock it. You'll be surprised!!
I can say from experience that the Paleto diet didn't help me. I was 290 pounds when I finally decided to start losing weight. The worst thing about that was that I didn’t know how to start. After several months of following the Paleto diet, I came across a very simple method here http://easyfreediet.weebly.com I decided to try it because it was free and easy to implement. Three months later I found myself weighing in at 170 pounds. I have to say it was probably the best diet plan in my whole life. Today I am still using the strategy to keep my body maintained.
I've been following Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint since the beginning of November last year. The Primal Blueprint is a little different from paleo in that it allows some dairy and encourages strength training 2-3x per week, 3-5+ hours of slow movement (not chronic cardio) and a 10-15 minute sprint workout every 7-10 days. Physically I feel so much better and to date I've lost 24 pounds. My resting heart rate has gone down from 85 bpm to 50 bpm. I've been taking body fat measurements for a few years now and the last time I was at this weight was in 2009. Back then my body fat percentage was higher than it is today even though I was eating enough calories to offset any muscle loss and I was doing strength training 3x a week plus cardio on other days. Dropping the grains and adding in more protein has done my body a world of good. :-)
I was considering this until I read "no dairy". I'm out. I'll stick with Atkins or the Primal that encourages low carb, healthy eating while still allowing me dairy. I know my weakness :)
My family eats this way and we've seen our health take a dramatic turn for the better! My cholesterol dropped like a rock without the use of statins. No more PMS, no more arthritis pain, no more high blood pressure, depression, IBS, gastroparesis, skin rash, migraines, or uncontrollable blood sugars. I have been able to cut my insulin dose in half AND drop one of my diabetes meds. My youngest son had weekly migraines and tummy aches almost daily...but no more. Losing weight (or gaining it if needed) is a pleasant side effect to regaining control of our health this way.
I guess you could say we're more Primal because we will eat some cheese, but dairy is not a main part of our diet anymore.
We haven't eaten this good in years! We're hardly deprived and really have no desire to go back to the conventional way of eating.
