Super Bowl Recipe Challenge: Easy Guacamole vs. Grilled Guacamole

Each day we'll be pitting two delicious recipes against each other and declaring one a winner. Join us today as we make guacamole!

Guacamole is always a crowd-pleaser, whether you're a Patriot or a Giant. (Or really, anyone in the entire universe.) With only a few ingredients and a bag of chips, you can throw down the green stuff and watch it disappear. Which is why the guacamole recipe challenge was a no-brainer. Make guac two times? No problem-o.

Trying to step up the guacamole game, I tested out a truly easy version and compared it to a grilled recipe that also added sour cream to the mix. Super interesting! Grab your chips, and dig in to see what won the Super Bowl guacamole challenge.

First, the recipes.

Easy Guacamole

adapted from Allrecipes


2 avocados
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 ripe tomato, seeded and chopped
1 lime, juiced
Salt and pepper to taste

1. Peel and mash avocados in a medium serving bowl.
2. Stir in onion, garlic, tomato, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Season with remaining lime juice and salt and pepper to taste. Chill for half an hour to blend flavors.

Grilled Guacamole

You can see from this photo that I took out the tomatoes for this bowl. Some people love 'em, and some people hate them, so it seemed logical to stick with the creamy texture of this particular recipe. Also, the cilantro had to go because so many people think cilantro tastes like soap. And no one wants to eat soap on Super Bowl Sunday. No one.

4 avocados, halved and pitted
1/2 cup diced red onion
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
1/2 cup reduced-fat sour cream
2 tablespoons lime juice
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or to taste
1. Preheat an outdoor grill for low heat, and lightly oil grate.
2. Cook the avocados on the preheated grill until just slightly browned and caramelized. Allow to cool to room temperature, then remove the skins, and cube.
3. Place 1/2 cup of the avocado into a mixing bowl, and mash together with the onion, jalapeno pepper, and sour cream. Stir in the lime juice, garlic salt, and hot pepper sauce, then gently fold in the remaining avocado. Chill 30 minutes before serving.

The Results:

And the winner is ... Easy Guacamole!

Even though we all agreed the grilled guac was super interesting and tasty, when you've got a hankering for guacamole, you want the classic. Amiright?
