What is it with Chick-fil-A? First they fight against the most virtuous vegetable on the planet: Kale. Hey, what did kale ever do to them? Now there's more bad news coming from Chick-ville: A cashier in Orange County, California labeled the receipts of two Asian customers as "Ching" and "Chong" instead of their actual names. FACEPALM!
We all know this is NOT OKAY, right, everyone? Chick-fil-A's public relations VP Don Perry was quick to say that the fast food company does not condone the racist slur at all: This was "simply [a] case of immaturity, failed judgment, and human error." The cashier was fired. But I'm starting to wonder, is Chick-fil-A the fast food restaurant for cranks?
It's like Chick is on the verge of becoming the clubhouse for people who identify as politically-incorrect grouches. There's the company's loose ties with anti-gay groups. When you add that to their opposition to the "Eat Kale" T-shirt and this latest lovely incident, it all starts to paint a cranky portrait of the fast food company.
Hey, fried chicken place, where is the love? Why do you only like literate cows? Why are you not spreading the holiday cheer these days?
Maybe I'm being too hard on Chick-fil-A. After all, Kevin Lee, who posted the two offensive receipts on his blog, doesn't think the incident speaks for the whole company. He posted,
I realize Chik-Fil-A [sic] hasn't exactly had the best track record when it comes to issues of social justice, but I don’t think the horrible mistake on the part of one individual is reason enough to launch a witch hunt. There’s no way the person who hired this woman would have been able to know she’d do something so stupid.
All Kevin wants is for people to "be respectful and THINK." So there is your holiday message for the week -- no lump of coal in Chick-fil-A's stocking this year after all. Well, maybe a small piece for that cashier.
Do you think it's fair to judge Chick-fil-A by its employees?
