5 Foods That May Help Breast Cancer Prevention

breat cancer prevention foodsWe all know that if we want to live long and be healthy in those twilight years, we need to eat right and exercise. We know that hot dogs are not our friends, no matter how delicious. And we are all familiar with the elements of a "heart healthy diet."

Even though one isn't usually put on a "cancer prevention" diet without having any cancer diagnosis, the fact is there are some foods that contribute to your odds of getting cancer (think fried and sugar-laden), and specifically breast cancer (like alcohol). Luckily, there are some seriously delicious foods that can help ward off breast cancer as well.

Here are five foods that taste great and can possibly help prevent breast cancer.


1. Berries

It's always exciting when berry season comes into full bloom. Whether it's raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, or strawberries, berries are a fantastic food to prevent cancer for many reasons. One, berries are high in fiber, which reduces estrogen in your blood stream that causes cancer. Also they're high in antioxidants, which some studies have shown can slow the growth of cancer.

2. Roast Chicken

Grilling meat to a char creates carcinogens. So skip the grill, and roast a juicy chicken using fresh herbs and lemon. You'll also have leftovers to eat healthy all week long.

3. Curry

Curcumin is a yellow spice found in turmeric and curry and has recently been shown to protect your body against breast cancer. You can shake some turmeric on snacks for a kick, or create a favorite curry dish in your own home like a Butternut Squash and Chickpea Curry. Or head out to an Indian restaurant and order up your favorite curry.

4. Salmon

Poach it, toss it in a salad, just make it delicious and fresh. Salmon has an incredible amount of vitamin D, which is seen as crucial to preventing cancer. Vitamin D deficiencies are found in many cancer patients, so load up on that delicious D!

5. Winter Squash

From butternut to squash blossoms, winter squash is rich in taste and rich in antioxidants. Sprinkle some olive oil and herbs on any squash, and you've got a mouth-watering side that makes dinnertime exciting.
