Perfectly Sprinkled Sugar Cookies

Everybody loves a good sugar cookie. There really isn't a deliciously simple dessert quite like it. Not only are they a popular after-dinner choice, but they're super easy to make!

I decided to bake a batch of these cookies last week and thought I'd share the recipe. I found it while browsing The Food Network -- they always have the best sweets! These cookies are so fun to whip up, even your kids will want to help. The coolest part is they're great for any occasion, and using different kinds of sprinkles can really pretty them up!

Sugar Cookies

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Sprinkles or colored sugar for decorating

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In one bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. In a separate bowl, mix the butter and sugar until it's smooth. Add the egg and vanilla. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients. Add enough buttermilk to make sure the dough is soft, not wet.

Take teaspoons of dough and roll them into cookie shapes. Place onto an ungreased baking sheet, then moisten the top of each with buttermilk so the sprinkles (of your choice!) can stick.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Delicious!
