As bacon-mania has swept the nation, it only makes sense that pig prices are on the rise and bacon costs are high. There's nothing you can eat that someone hasn't tried to shove bacon into, most of the time with delicious results. Bacon ice cream? Check. Bacon chocolate bar? Check. Denny's even has a Baconalia thing going on where they offer up as many menu items as possible infused with bacon. (Did someone say infused? Bacon-infused bourbon is also a go.)
It's like we're a nation of people who have been unduly influenced by that crazed dog on the commercial and all we can think about is, "Bacon, bacon, bacon, baaaaacon!!!" Clearly that and the crappy recession are why there has apparently been a rise in pig thievery.
That's right, pig thievery. In Iowa and Minnesota, big-time pig country, farmers are not amused as they show up to take their little piggies to the market and find out they no longer live there. Just recently 150 swine in Minnesota disappeared from their farm in Lafayette, and down the road in Lake Lillian, 594 pigs were stolen. These guys weigh around 270 pounds apiece! Seriously, who's doing the heavy lifting here?
The pig farmers say they've never seen anything like this and are losing thousands of dollars in income as a result of someone taking their pork chops. They've probably never seen it before because pigs are huge and not an easy item to steal. Also pigs are not known for their genteel manner, which means someone must really want those large animals with attitude.
I'm thinking expensive bacon is to blame. Expensive, delicious bacon. I mean, I'm thinking about going and lifting a pig right now. Aren't you?
How much do you love bacon?
