Chicken for Breakfast? Only When It's Free

Chik-fil-A sandwichHave you heard? Chick-fil-A is giving away free breakfast to those lucky enough to live by one ... or willing to drive a great distance. All you have to do is go online, fill out a form (when it's working -- it's been down due to a surge of people wanting some free grub), make a reservation (fancy huh?), then show up at your local Chick-fil-A during your designated time during the week of September 6-10 and get your free fried chicken ... for breakfast.

They had me at free, but really, fried chicken for breakfast? Since moving to Florida, I have grown to have a certain amount of respect for this chain and its pretty good chicken, but first thing in the morning, it just sounds so wrong ... at first.

Chicken is protein, and that's good first thing in the morning. While it's not something I've ever thought of frying up for breakfast, I suppose it's no worse than sausage or bacon or the items on any other fast food breakfast menu. The restaurant has served breakfast for awhile, but I've never given it a whole lot of thought in the early morning light until now, since it's being offered up as a freebie. Maybe it's time to embrace chicken as a breakfast meat.

The menu actually doesn't look that bad; okay it actually looks weirdly delicious (in that perfect hangover food kind of way) if I just forget what time of day I would be consuming the items. There are adorable little Chick-n-Minis, the kind of which I'm sure I could eat dozens after a night on the town; and there is a chicken, egg, and cheese sandwich on a sunflower multi-grain bagel (pictured). There are chicken breakfast burritos, and even a few healthier options like multi-grain oatmeal and yogurt parfaits. So it's kind of a mix-up of traditional breakfast meets ... fried chicken.

For those who haven't seen the early chicken light, perhaps this free teaser will convert them into morning cluckers. I can't imagine it will tempt me (unless I start partying again like I did in college), but as long as it's free, I'm willing to give it a try.

Oh, and if you can't get through on the site, keep trying. They're working on it. You can also follow @cfareservations for updates on Twitter.
