Seven Layer Magic Coconut Cookie Bars

seven layer magic barsThere are some desserts that bring you back to your childhood. Just thinking about them -- and especially tasting them -- puts you right there, in your mom's kitchen or your kindergarten classroom. "Magic cookie bars" are totally that dessert for me. I think they were super-trendy (like cupcakes are now) back in the '70s and '80s.

And I say it's time to revive an old-school classic! If you're not familiar, the easy to make, ooey-gooey cookie bar features coconut, nuts, chocolate, and a buttery graham cracker crust to bring it all together. Trust me -- they are out of this world!


Seven Layer Magic Coconut Cookie Bars from


  • 1/2 cup butter 
  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 (14-ounce) can of sweetened condensed milk (the classic choice is Eagle Brand)
  • 1 1/4 cups flaked coconut
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (any, but walnuts are perfect!)
  • 2 cups chocolate chips and/or white chocolate chips


  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF.
  2. Melt butter in bottom of 9 x 13 baking pan.
  3. Spread graham cracker crumbs evenly in butter.
  4. Pour condensed milk evenly over graham crackers.
  5. Layer remaining ingredients.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes.
  7. Let cool in pan, then cut into bars.
  8. Enjoy!
