Cops Who Shut Down Kids' Lemonade Stand Hate Summer

kid's lemonade standThe Georgia police who busted three little girls for running a lemonade stand without -- wait for it -- a business license or required permits must hate summer, not to mention lazy days, warm sunshine, refreshing, cold drinks, and childhood ingenuity. There's just no other logical explanation as to why they could be so heartless and cruel!

Here's how the crackdown on the illegal lemonade stand came about:

In order to save up for trip to the water park (my heart, it breaks), the three girls were selling lemonade outside one of their houses. After only one day in business, however, the stand was shut down by police because the girls had not obtained the appropriate business license, peddler's permit, and food permit required to operate, even on residential property. Guess how much it costs to obtain all those permits? Fifty dollars per day (or $180 per year)! Is it just me, or is that a heck of a lot of lemonade?

Moreover, the cops found the stand to be highly suspicious because it wasn't clear :

... how the lemonade was made, who made it or what was in it.

*Big sigh.*

It doesn't matter if it's watered-down Crystal Light or freshly-squeezed juice from organic lemons served over cold-draft filtered ice cubes. Lemonade stands are one of the best parts about summer, and anyone who would bust little kids for operating one illegally must be having a really bad day. It's not like the kids are hawking raw meat or pushing sushi on a street corner (and, thus, posing a serious threat to public health). It's sugar, citrus (sometimes), and water -- what in the world could go wrong?

Just the other day, a kid in the park offered me a questionable lemony substance in a cheap plastic cup for $1 (this is New York, after all), and I was happy to buy it. Because that's what you do in the summer: You buy over-priced crappy lemonade from kids. You may or may not end up drinking it, but it's fun and you feel really good about yourself. Did the cops not get the memo?

Do you think rules are rules and the cops were right to shut down this illegal lemonade stand?
