Do you know what today is? It's July 11. You know, 7/11. Otherwise known as one of the best days of the entire year. Why, you may ask? Well, because it's Free Slurpee Day at 7-Eleven stores! In honor of the company's not-so-actual birthday, the company is giving away 7.11-ounce Slurpees in stores, for FREE!
Talk about the perfect promotion for a steamy start to the week, eh? The best part: These little treats aren't as bad for you as you might think. Dare I say it, I wish I started slurping a long time ago.
Ranging from Fanta Kiwi Strawberry and Summertime Lime to Alienade (in honor of the new movie Cowboys & Aliens), choosing from the 26 different flavors may not exactly make today's trip to 7-Eleven easy. But you know what will? The fact that most every flavor of Slurpee is under 70 calories for an 8-ounce serving. Two words: Cha. Ching.
If you're like me, then I just saved you the time spent conducting the subconscious nutritional info glance that happens right before you put anything in your mouth. However -- if you're not, then I was still able to shed some light on how NOT SO BAD these drinks are. Seriously, until today, I imagined that they were horrible for you.
Compared to some other afternoon snacking alternatives, they're fabulous. Let's be serious here: Have you met a handsome fella named the frappuccino? I have. Many-a-time, indeed. And even the slender, light version of that tasty caffeinated beverage ranks in at 110 calories (coffee light, grande). The Slurpee emerges victorious!
Of course, you have to understand that there is some sugar involved here, which is where the previous bad stereotype comes from, I believe. I'm pretty sure I've seen about 10 movies depicting kiddos bouncing off the wall because they had one-too-many Slurpees. The good news: From what I can see, however, none of them have more than 18 grams of the sweet stuff. And compared to the frap, which has 32 grams of sugar, that's a super sweet deal! For an afternoon pick-me-up (and only 7.11 ounces of it, at that) on this once a year occasion, I say let's do this.
Will you be going to 7-Eleven to snag a free Slurpee today? Do you have a favorite flavor?
