You'll Never Guess What Starbucks Was Almost Named

starbucks cupStarbucks is such an ubiquitous part of the culinary landscape. It's difficult to imagine what the streets of our towns and cities would look like without one of its coffee stores on every corner. Yet, that's probably what would have happened had one of the company's founders gotten his way. Just listen to what he wanted to name the coffee brand back in 1971 ...

Writer and Starbucks co-founder Gordon Bowke wanted to name the coffee company "Pequod" after the doomed whale-ship in Moby-Dick. Thankfully his partner, Terry Heckler, talked some sense into him and rejected his horrible idea, allegedly with this exclamation:

No one's going to drink a cup of Pee-quod!

Of course, this news shouldn't come as a complete surprise -- after all, Starbuck is another character from the Herman Melville classic -- so at least Bowke wasn't that far off base. Now that I think about it, a cup of Pequod doesn't sound so bad. But maybe that's just because I've been a little over-saturated with Starbucks lately ...

What do you think about Pequod as a name for coffee?
