Back in May, the Internet was abuzz with rumors of a Triple Double Oreo -- three chocolate Oreo wafers with two layers of cream, one chocolate and one vanilla -- making its debut in August. Food bloggers were absolutely beside themselves with excitement, and some even went as far as to fondly christen it the "Double Down of cream-filled cookies" and the "Big Mac-style Oreo." Clearly, this was huge news in cookies.
Since then, however, the Internet has gone mostly silent about the new Oreos. Usually, at least some reviewers can get their hands on a new product ahead of its official launch; in this case, though, the Triple Double Oreo is proving most elusive. (We couldn't even get our hands on one.)
But one package has surfaced on eBay, and you won't believe how much it's going for ...
Before we tell you the price, there's something else you should know: This isn't just an ordinary package of Triple Double Oreos. It's a package of Triple Double Oreos signed by Shaquille O'Neal, and it's actually a charity fundraiser sponsored by OREO cookies and the NBA star. (It's a rather fitting partnership because a "triple-double" in a basketball game occurs when a player records three double-digit stats in one game -- for example, 24 points, 12 assists, and 14 rebounds.) All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newark.
So, what's the current bid?
As of this publication, the current price is $80! And, the auction goes until June 17, so who knows how high the bidding will go by then.
I know people are ecstatic about the new Oreos -- and, granted, it is for a great cause. But $80+ for a package of cookies is ridiculous. I don't care how many cream-filled layers it has.
How much would you pay for a package of Triple Double Oreos?
