First things first: Did you know that National Doughnut Day is actually a real holiday? (It's not one of those phony made-up days like National Fruitcake Day or Sneak Some Zucchini on Your Neighbor’s Porch Night.) Celebrated on the first Friday of June (that's today!), National Doughnut Day is a 73-year-old tradition that originated with the The Salvation Army in Chicago to honor women who served doughnuts to U.S. soldiers during World War I and World War II.
Now, on to the good stuff: Where can you get free doughnuts to celebrate?
Krispy Kreme has the best deal: Every customer gets a free doughnut of any variety -- no purchase necessary.
At Dunkin Donuts, however, you've got to buy something at a participating location to get a freebie. DD will give one free doughnut to each customer buying a beverage (other than bottles of sodas/drinks in the cooler). Visit DD's official website to find a location near you.
And, of course, if you want to celebrate the big day at home, consider these delicious doughnut recipes here on The Stir:
Happy National Doughnut Day to you!
