Doughnuts & Wine: The Best Combo You've Never Tried

donutsI had a lightbulb moment reading a story about a new reality TV show in the works that pairs doughnuts with wine. Doughnuts and wine! These are two of my favorite things! Why hadn't I thought of putting those two together before?

Probably because I don't usually have wine with breakfast. Bloody Mary with a glazed doughnut? Blech! Although I did once have a bacon donut that went very well with a Bloody Mary. (Oh yes, there is such a thing as a bacon doughnut. Dreams do come true.) The orange juice in a mimosa would probably clash with the sugar in the doughnut. But what if we moved the doughnut to dessert, since, you know, it's not exactly the breakfast of champions?

Consider the possibilities ...

How about:

  • Chocolate frosted doughnut with a spicy Zinfandel
  • Glazed doughnut with Riesling
  • Strawberry jelly-filled doughnut with Rosé

Wine would elevate the doughnut to the level it has deserved all along -- sweet, puffy pillows of dessert deliciousness. And did you know that doughnuts are the new cupcakes? It seems like every time I turn around, there's a new bakery turning out their own fancy, homemade doughnut. Maybe it's a conspiracy of all those frosting-haters who still want a small, handheld sugar treat, but doughnuts are hot right now.

But what if you don't quite trust your wine-pairing finesse? What if the guy at the wine store laughs at you when you ask what goes well with crullers? This is why I'm hoping TLC, the Food Network, or the Food Channel pick up this doughnuts and wine show. I mean, just listen to this quote from a participant.

That just changed my life. I love doughnut, and I love wine. I normally eat doughnut with milk, but this is much better.

That just changed my life. Enough said. I know what I'm having for dessert this weekend.
