I heard a Thanksgiving horror story the other day from a friend of mine. One year at dinnertime his mom went to take the turkey out of the oven, only to discover that she had forgotten to turn the oven on! Thanksgiving would have been ruined had it not been for a guest who knew a really fast turkey recipe. I've included it here. Check it out, then post your own Thanksgiving disaster—we've all got one.
Sam's Really Fast Turkey Recipe That Saved Thanksgiving 2003
Set oven at 550. For the first 30-45 minutes, cook turkey until brown, basting every 10 minutes. Turn whole turkey over, breast side down (be careful, this process can splash grease). Cover everything with tin foil—pan and all. Turn oven to 450. Cook breast side down for 1.5 hours.
*My friend says his family has started cooking their bird like this on a fairly regular basis because it turns out very moist meat.

I've never hosted Thanksgiving so I don't have a personal disaster, but I've been to a couple of disaster family gatherings. One time my Aunt forgot to take the plastic bag out of the turkey's insides before cooking it. She only realized when the smell of burning plastic filled the house. We never ate that turkey. Another time - the first time I went to my husband's family's for the holiday - their oven broke halfway through cooking the turkey. We had to carry everything to a neighbor's house to finish it.
I always wondering what would happen if you left the insides in before cooking. Yikes! Now I know!
One of the funniest Thanksgiving disasters we had was one year a friend our broke our wine opener about 5 minutes into the party. To our guests, it was UNTHINKABLE that we have Thanksgiving without alcohol, so we had to borrow one from the neighbors. We still tease our friend about it to this day-how he tried to sabotage Thanksgiving!
One year we decided to have turkey the week before Thanksgiving because we were going to my parents for Thanksgiving and my mom was not able to make a turkey that year.
So I went to check on the turkey and the oven was warm, but the turkey was nowhere near cooked. The oven had broken during cooking. I threw it in the (thank goodness it was small enough) and we had it the next day. I cannot even remember what we ended up eating.
Later on my husband took out the oven and discovered melted wires in the blue box where the oven wires connect to the house electricity. Very scary. Fortunately, we just had a ruined dinner and not a burned house.
Oops, somehow the word "crock pot" got left out of my post above....
we have yet to have a disaster, usually it's the mil's attitude that ruins everything for me. but the food-always good!
My first turkey was swimming in liquids. I don't know why I decide that I needed to bath the turkey. I poured a half a pan of water over it and it was a disaster. I am a much better turkey cooker today. Thank God. My poor husband.
Last Thanksgiving we spent the day at my MIL's, and the day was already stress filled because we don't have a great relationship. She insisted on cooking brisket instead of turkey though, and attempted to make 3 whole briskets shoves into 1 roaster. We tried to warn her that there was just no way this would cook in time. To make matters worse, my FIL insisted on opening the lid to check in constantly, which only slowed down the cooking process... needless to say we ate all side dishes that day. :)
