When President Obama threw a Super Bowl party at the White House last month, it wasn't just any old beer that was served. It was White House Honey Ale, brewed right there in the White House by their trained chefs, using real honey from their honey bees. Special, but it wasn't just a one-time special occasion type of thing, it seems more homebrew is coming from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
According to Obama Foodorama, the Obamas are the first residents of the famous address to take up the art of homebrewing. And for good reason -- it's a bad idea. I'm typically the first to offer a big cheer for beer, but this just isn't right. Can you imagine the bar fights these bottles could bring? All we need is a bunch of drunks fueled with presidential brew.
While beer in moderation is fine, it's also the source of many awful problems for people around the world, and it doesn't seem like our president should contribute to those problems. It would kind of be like Michelle Obama marketing her own line of junk food. It's not that no one should make those tempting products, it's just that those in the White House shouldn't.
What's next, papal wine? Actually, come to think of it, that might not be a bad idea. Catholics go through plenty of the vino each weekend at masses around the world. If the Pope started stomping his own grapes, think of the savings!
But back to the White House beer ...
Sure it likely will just be used for special occasions and won't be marketed to the masses, but is it really necessary? What about supporting American breweries?
Also, it's not the Obamas doing the brewing themselves as some stress reliever or fun hobby, it's their gang of chefs -- about 12 in all -- who are doing the brewing. Don't they have anything better to do? Do we really want our taxpayer dollars handed over for homebrewing? I hate to be a party pooper, but no thanks.
What do you think of White House Honey Ale -- cheers or cut them off?

Can't be any sillier than any other gambit in the white house. Purpose of a private bowling alley? Waste of tax payer dollars? Doesn't matter what political party the president is he's always going to do something to displease people out there. Can't please everyone.
How is this any different than fancy gingerbread houses that are made at christmas?
The president's have to pay for a large majority of their food purchases. I think the chef is paid by taxpayers but the food (even what is served for company) is paid for by the president.
all of our founding fathers were brewers at home. it's just a food product made in their kitchen. i'm all for it.
actually, yes it is a good use of our taxpayer money. Our homebrew costs about $10 a case to make. Unless the president is drinking Natty Light or BLD, this is the most money he has saved us since he came into office.
I bet the chefs are really enjoying brewing the beer. Homebrewing is an industry supported by many different sectors: there are people who make and sell the ingredients to make it, people who make and sell the bottles, etc. They're mostly small business people too: why NOT support them? If he's spending money, that means that somebody is GETTING that money, which is good for the economy, right? I hardly think that eliminating homebrewing from our economy is going to positively influence the national debt.
