As Starbucks celebrates 40 years of keeping Americans awake and alert, they've introduced a bunch of new baked goods to their menu. They call them petites, which sounds cute and all, but these tempting little treats are grande diet disasters in disguise -- but what delicious disguises they are.
The most dangerous are the cake pops. These perfectly round little balls of moist cake on a stick are topped with thick frosting and toppings. Could there be a more perfectly perfect food? Well, if they were calorie-free, perhaps, but these are anything but. While they boast that each one has less than 200 calories, they're also so small I could eat about 200 of them.
They come in three flavors of which I grudgingly taste tested for the purposes of this article. I wish I could tell you they sucked, that they're not worth your while, but I would be lying. Here's the scoop:
Birthday Cake Pop (170 calories, 9 grams of fat) -- This consists of yellow cake surrounded by white chocolate frosting with white sprinkles. It's pretty in pink, and my pinkalicious 2-year-old daughter went crazy for it. It was good no doubt, but not so good I couldn't resist it on a semi-regular basis.
Tiramisu Cake Pop (170 calories, 9 grams of fat) -- This coffee-chocolate combination is incredible and will NOT be easy to resist. The cake is perfect, the coffee flavor just strong enough. Oh, and the best part -- it's topped with a chocolate-covered coffee bean. Yum!
Rocky Road Cake Pop (180 calories, 9 grams of fat) -- Of course the one with the most calories would have to be my favorite. This one comes with a chocolate cake center, topped with creamy fudge frosting dotted with chopped almonds and tiny mini marshmallows. Yes, they are as good as they sound ... and then some.
Also on the new petite menu are the: carrot cake mini cupcake (delish), lemon sweet square (my least favorite), peanut butter mini cupcake (meh), red velvet whoopie pie (oh my!), and the salted caramel sweet square (amazing). So much sugar, so little willpower, and they all go so damn well with coffee.
Making them even more tempting is the fact that Starbucks is offering them for FREE. That's right, between 2-5 p.m. this Thursday, March 10 - Saturday, March 12, you can get a free petite when you purchase any drink and start your own new addiction. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Have you tried any of the new Starbucks petites? What's your favorite?
