Like your breakfast topped with butter and syrup? If so, you're in for a real treat. National Pancake Day 2011 is being celebrated today at International House of Pancakes (IHOP) locations all over the country. The chain is giving away FREE short stacks of pancakes all day today. There actually appears to be a reason for it, too ...
Pancake Day is also known as Shrove Day, which is the last day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Why pancakes when observing Shrove Day? It's an attempt to cram as much high-fat food in your belly as possible before the fasting of Lent. Techhhhnically, Shrove Day isn't until next Tuesday, but it seems IHOP decided to get a leg up on the holiday today.
Thankfully, IHOP isn't just making it about the food. They're also asking their patrons to make a donation today to the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Last year, IHOPs served over 4 million pancakes to mark National Pancake Day and raised more than $2.1 million for children's charities. Eeeep, that is a LOT of pancakes and a LOT of moolah!
I'm lovin' the cause, but I dunno how likely I am to take advantage of the deal. I occasionally crave chocolate chip (ooh, or DOUBLE chocolate chip) pancakes. I also have a soft spot for fresh blueberry pancakes, because when I was growing up, my parents would take me for vacation to where my great-grandparents owned a farm in South Haven, Michigan. The Lake Michigan-adjacent beach town is known for their local blueberries, and I have sentimental memories of some pretty awesome breakfasts there.
But sans chocolate or blueberries -- I'm not much of a pancake person. I know, I know. Pancake/carb-overload with your bee-fast seems to be something of an American tradition. It always used to amaze me when I'd go to IHOP with friends in high school (because it was basically the closest thing we had to a 24/7 diner) that you can get a side of pancakes with just about every single thing on the menu. I mean, I know it's the International House of PANCAKES, but who needs pancakes with their chicken Caesar salad wrap or burger?
Whatever, I'm not judging! Well, not today at least. If you want your free short stack, go to town! Just be sure you give a little cash to the kiddos on your way out the door.
Will you be taking advantage of National Pancake Day this year?
