french toastThere's nothing quite as romantic on Valentine's Day as breakfast in bed. (Although this year you'll probably have to do it the weekend before because the day of love falls on a Monday.)

This easy recipe for Vanilla Soaked French Toast is my breakfast go-to. You can dress it up with powdered sugar for the big day or serve it simply with warm maple syrup all year-round!

Vanilla Soaked French Toast adapted from The Pastry Affair

  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup half & half
  • 3 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 6-8 thick slices French bread (slightly stale is best to sop up the egg mixture)

Whisk together the half & half, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

Soak bread slices in egg mixture for at least 4 to 5 minutes.

Lightly oil or butter and heat a griddle or skillet on medium-high. Place the soaked bread on the griddle and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until French toast is lightly scorched.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar and/or serve with warm maple syrup.
