Girl Scouts Get Mean & Discontinue Cookies

Shock and dismay rolled across the sugar-eating world this week as the Girl Scouts announced that several councils are participating in a pilot program to drop all but their six most popular Girl Scout Cookies.

Worry not, Thin Mints fans: Those, along with Trefoils (shortbread) and Do Si Dos (oatmeal cookies filled with peanut butter), are the three varieties every bakery that makes Girl Scout cookies has to produce every year. Other ones in the "Super Six" program are Samoas (woohoo!), Tagalongs (peanut butter patties), and Lemon Chalet Cremes.

Each council only offers eight varieties of cookies every year anyway, so this is not the dramatic reduction people make it seem. And in reality ... I don't think this goes far enough. The Girl Scouts could probably raise just as much money doing two or three varieties of cookies.

I mean ... does anyone actually eat Lemon Chalet Cremes? Or, for that matter, Do Si Dos? When people get all crazy over Girl Scout cookies, never do you hear them get all worked up about those kinds ... it's all about the Thin Mints and Samoas, baby. You do run across the occasional oddball who likes Trefoils or Tagalongs.

I say get rid of all of them except the Thin Mints and Samoas, and individual councils can decide to add a third or fourth. They're the only ones that are completely unique to Girl Scouts ... you can't find them anywhere else.

Time for the Girl Scouts to go a little Mean Girl and cut off the unpopular ones altogether. It won't be the first time. They've discontinued other Girl Scout cookies over time, some of which were really popular. Remember Aloha Chips? Or Lemon Coolers? My favorites are long gone too; they were a thin oatmeal cookie dipped in chocolate at the bottom. So, so good, and long gone!

What's your favorite Girl Scout cookie?

Since when does liking Peanut butter n Choclate make one an oddball??? Hmmm???

Yes-thin mints are the best, along with Samoas...But Tagalongs.......Odd to like??? I thinks not

Being a former GS...shortbread would be a bigger choice to drop than the Tagalongs.

Not everyone that likes cookies likes them really sweet. I love a good shortbread, so I buy them. Samoas are okay once in awhile but, too sweet for me, and I am not a huge fan of chocolate. I really enjoyed the cranberry granola type cookies they had last year, they were amazing. In my opinion.

Samoas for me, Tagalongs for husband.   And I do like a good shortbread cookie, but you can get those from just about any grocery store year round.

I guess I'm the odd ball. I love all of them! And I'm not saying that because I am the Troop Cookie Manager for my daughter's troop either! LOL

Our council (GS of NE TX) have all the same cookies as we did last year-Thank U Berry Munch, Lemon Chalets, Dulce de Leche, as well as the popular ones. The only ones that they have dropped were the sugar free chocolate chip, and that was the year before last.

The only ones I personally don't like are the peanut butter ones...... But my sons and DH do..... Annually we buy: 12 boxes of thin mints, 3 boxes of lemon, 2 boxes of shortbread (love them with tea/hot cocca, although years i had teething children I bought closer to 6), 3 boxes of samoa's.... then my DH would buy the peanut butter ones from co-workers children... the big order was placed with a niece.

In all honesty, Samoas and thin mints make me barf, and I won't even give my husband kisses if he eats one because I can't stand it afterwards either.... I usually only get the ones with peanut butter, I know of 2 different kinds I've gotten over the years but I don't know their names.

The troops in our area did only the Super Six this year, which was fine with me. Last year, we only sold a couple of boxes of the 2 extras we offered, which were the Thank U Berry Munch cookies and a sugar-free chocolate chip. I will admit, we don't sell many of the Lemon Chalets, but we have sold almost as many Tagalongs as I did Thin Mints this year. In fact, we've sold more Tagalongs than Samoas already! Also, since you took the potshot at Do-si-dos, we've sold quite a few of those as well. Trefoils and Lemon Chalets are waaay behind.

I have no idea why I just typed all that :-)
