If you ever needed an excuse to take a few minutes for yourself and grab a cup of Joe, then today's your day. It's National Coffee Break Day. Unlike Dress Up Your Pet Day or National Grouch Day, this is a holiday that many of us are already celebrating on the regular. In fact, I'll take mine regular with a splash of skim, please.
And this year, it's an even BIGGER deal, because it's the National Coffee Associations' 100th anniversary! Wonderful, really, except coffee giants like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts aren't offering up anything special. Well, besides an annoying continuation of tweets asking customers what they're drinking.
How are you going to have a "monopoly" on the coffee business and not celebrate YOUR holiday?!
Imagine, for a second, that it's National Wear Red Day (yes, it exists). And to celebrate, you wear green. Right, it doesn't make sense. And neither does a day dedicated to coffee without a few great discounts from your favorite barista.
Starbucks had no problem getting rid of their high prices for wireless Internet to draw in customers by offering the service for free, so what about just a teensy little discount on this national holiday? And you, Dunkin' Donuts, you've been so generous by offering up a free pound of java to blood donors this month -- what about a free size upgrade to keep up your street cred?
I'm just going to say it: Shame on you both.
For those of you who are looking for a way to take advantage of the day from your desk -- there still are a few sales from smaller brewers and chains throughout the U.S.:
Dream Coast Coffee, operated out of Pheonix, Arizona, is offering customers 50 percent off online purchases today only.
Organic Coffee is giving away the "World's Best Coffee Maker" (according to them), a MoccaMaster KBT741. Go to their Facebook page and "like" their company to enter.
Hardback Coffee Café at Hastings Entertainment chains is offering a 12-oz. cup of coffee for just 25 cents. Cheap coffee and new DVDs in one place? Sign me up!
And then of course, there are loads of local deals that you can check out on the National Coffee Break Day website.
Looking for someone to celebrate with? Well, if none of your coworkers are available, you can always sip some Joe while watching Ozzy Osbourne order his java black or Julia Roberts sipping on LaVazza. Just make sure you don't end up addicted like Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters:
Will you be celebrating National Coffee Break Day?
