Pigs in a Blanket Get an Upgrade

pigs in a blanketLittle pigs in a blanket are the classic bite-sized appetizer to serve to a roomful of party-goers or football fans. I've given the traditional recipe a face-lift by using a few gourmet ingredients -- flavored sausage, puff pastry (which can be found in the dessert section of the freezer case), and a few fancy condiments. The how-to is still simple -- it's the end product that is more sophisticated!

Fancy Pigs in a Blanket

  • Puff pastry
  • Dijon mustard
  • Cranberry preserves
  • Gourmet sausage or hot dogs in different flavors -- for example, organic apple and Gouda chicken sausage, chicken chorizo, sun-dried tomato and basil-flavored sausage, etc.
  • Caraway seeds (optional)
  • Grated cheese (optional)
  • Egg

Roll out puff pastry. Cut dough into rectangles that are long and wide enough to wrap around an entire sausage/frank. Spread a thick layer of Dijon mustard and or cranberry preserves on each rectangle. Sprinkle with cheese. Roll dough around sausage and seal seam by pressing dough together. Cut franks crosswise into thirds and arrange on greased baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with caraway seeds. Bake in oven at 375 for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
