2011: The Year of the Pie

Here's some breaking food news you need to know now: A California consulting group has released its list of the Top Restaurant Trends of 2011. This information is imperative to us as eaters because it delineates exactly which foods we will be consuming in the year to come.

And, according to this list, it looks like in 2011 we'll be consuming ... well ... everything!

That's right: This most recent list of restaurant trends includes everything from vegetables, hot dogs, and bread to sausage, popcorn, and yogurt. In fact the margin of error of these food predictions is tiny given that the company has named practically every food in existence.

Here are some of the top items that caught our eye in particular:

1. Pie

According to the consultant, pie is the #1 trend for 2011:

This is not just sweet pies, this is savory pies, bite-sized pies. They are even blended into milkshakes ... I’ll eat pie if I don’t get this one right at the end of the year.

Now, I don't know about you, but to me this pie news is shocking. Shocking. Almost as shocking as if someone was to say that jeans were going to come back in style sometime soon. (Really? What restaurant doesn't serve pie?)

2. Popsicles, Dirt, Pretzels, and Hummus

But we already knew that (click the links above).

3. Mini plates

Is it just me or does it seem like mini plates and mini food have been a trend since the beginning of time? No bother: Mini food is and always will be so very cute.

The items listed above don't seem all that new and noteworthy; but a few other trends on the list may be worth looking out for on 2011 restaurant menus. These include: Neck, whey, kumquats, hay, and soft-serve.

And the only thing missing from the list: What about pickles?
