Have you ever noticed that people who shop local tend to look alike?

That's exactly the point of this graphic from My Burning Kitchen, which pokes fun at the stereotypical farmers' market customer. (Click through to see the lower half of her farmers' market uniform and accessories.)
I can personally attest that most of the women shopping at farmers' markets in Chicago and New York look exactly like this. Plus, they're either carrying a yoga mat or one of those collapsible market tote bags. (And all the men are scruffy with bicycle helmets.)
In fact, I myself am guilty of sporting this garb when I pay a visit to the market; therefore, I'm beyond offended that I -- and people like me -- would be the subject of such mockery. In our defense ...
First, can I help it if my yoga class just happens to always immediately proceed and follow the farmers' market? (Thus, the Lululemon yoga pants and mat and eco-friendly stainless steel BPA-free canteen.) You want me to be comfortable and hydrated, don't you?
As for the sunglasses, I need something to shield my face while I spend hours searching through the hundreds of varieties of heirloom tomatoes.
The reusable recycled bag is perfect for holding all my farmers' market produce (which by the way is all individually packaged in little plastic bags for freshness!).
And, of course, the farmers' market is the perfect place for my dog. She has to eat organically, too, doesn't she?
Do the women at your farmers' market look like this?

Heee heee. At our big urban farmer's market here in Detroit, it use dot be all little old ladies and poor people (the prices are awesome) along with a sizable contingent of in-the-know foodies from both the city and suburbs. Now, all those people are still there, but add the hipsters who travel in couples or packs and the tourists, who stop RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the crowded aisles to point out the pretty flowers or a darling display of apples, causing the rest of us to nearly trip right over them.
No not really. Our farmers markets are on farms, lol. But I do sometimes wear the black yoga pants & sandles, cause its Saturday mornings we go and I like to comfy casual.
The people at our market are all different. Some look like very earth conscious people and some are hoity toity people that pull up in large hummers or SUVs. LOL I probably look more like the cliche. I show up in my little mini Cooper and wear my jeans or a skirt and a comfy t shirt or tank top, my big sunglasses and I always take my own bags.
It's a mix in Austin. Hippies, hipsters, and the typical suburban moms that make the trip out. And also the above mentioned.
I did notice that my friends were just a liiiiittle bit more health conscious on Saturdays from 9 to 1. :P
Guffaw!
NYC perfectionistas looked a little different than our illustration, but all the same, if you know what I mean.
I always used to imagine they were imagining themselves uber-chic Parisiennes, sans make-up, out for their daily forage to whip up a stunning 8 course dinner pour la familie. LOL!
Too cute! Actually, Colorado Springs has a few "farmers markets" in the area. You see a little bit of everything, but I would say more Hippies than anything.
I actually prefer going straight to the source, so I go the farmers market...you know the ones along side the road, that the farmers themselves set up. I buy somethings in use in the next few days , but tend to buy in bulk in September every year. I buy 1-2 buschels of roasted aneheims to freeze, 50 lbs of onions, 50 lbs of peaches, 25-50 lbs of green beans, 25-50 lbs of tomatoes, and whatever looks yummy the days I get the chance to drive the 50 miles to get there. We are big on vegies and fruit, so even after all that I still have to hit the local ones for everyday produce. Most of the people at the far away stands I go to look like country folk. Then there is me with my 6+ children trailing behind me, in my skirt or dress, sniffing and getting to taste all the beautiful produce.
I see alot of seniors at out farmers market
Here is SW Florida - tank tops, shorts, sunglasses and, a reusable tote bag of course. I also wear a lot of sunscreen. Love the farmers market.
