Have your kids been asking for spaghetti tacos for dinner?
It's probably not because they can't decide between Italian and Mexican food.
Instead, blame Nickelodeon.
The seemingly incongruous meal is all the rage in kid cuisine now thanks to one of Nickelodeon's shows, iCarly, in which the title character's brother makes them for dinner one night. It has since taken on a life of its own, spurring a photo gallery with user-submitted photos and an unofficial recipe in a post on the iCarly blog. (Spaghetti tacos are simple to prepare -- you just make spaghetti with meat sauce and serve it in a crunchy taco shell.)
These spaghetti tacos have become so popular, in fact, that they even caught the eye of the New York Times this week in a story that says, "Spaghetti tacos are all the rage. Especially if you're less than 5 feet tall and live with your mother."
While I haven't tried them yet, I suppose I can see a certain appeal in the juxtaposed textures. (Which sounds pompous ... but all I really mean is that maybe adding some crunch to generally soft spaghetti wouldn't be such a bad thing.)
But I still don't think they sound like they'd TASTE very good. Maybe if you could make some sort of crunchy garlic-bread-like shell to house the spaghetti instead?
Although, then again, I've been surprised by odd food combos before, so maybe the kids are on to something ...
