Lose 7 Pounds in 2 Weeks on the Twinkie Diet

Looking to lose weight without sacrificing your sweet tooth? Try the Twinkie Diet! All you have to do is limit your calorie intake to 1,800 per day and eat mostly Twinkies and Nutty Bars.

Well, it works for Professor Mark Haub, anyway. The Kansas State University nutrition professor has been on a month-long Twinkie diet for the past month. He does fit in one serving of vegetables a day, but the rest is just junk food -- and within the first two weeks, he lost seven pounds!

Why on earth would a nutrition professor pull such a stunt? How do you lose weight eating all junk food? And besides the weight loss, how is that Twinkie diet treating him so far?


First, the why: Professor Haub is doing the Twinkie diet as part of a nutrition course he's teaching. Haub wants to challenge some assumptions people make about nutrition, weight, and health.

"Is it truly weight we should be concerned with or should it be what we eat?" Haub asked in an interview with AOL News. If we consider just weight-loss a sign of good health, then this diet could be considered healthy.

But Haub is also looking at his body mass index, body composition, blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels. While he's lost weight, his triglycerides (fat stored in the body), cholesterol, and blood pressure have all risen. And the poor guy started getting headaches within 36 hours of his diet. The upside? His daily food budget is just $5.

The experiment sounds a lot like Morgan Spurlock's stunt. He's the filmmaker who went on an all fast food diet for his documentary film Super Size Me. By the end of his month-long binge, Spurlock's body mass went up by 13 percent, his cholesterol level was at 230, and he generally felt like crap. His doctor begged him to stop early.

Meanwhile, Haub is about to take a 180-degree turn with his diet. Next month he plans to eat all health food -- but this time he'll try to gain weight.
